In Anguilla, Four Seasons will take over the Viceroy Anguilla in August. Also, new owners of the Cap Juluca resort will expand the property from 98 units to 730, and the Altamer Resort will expand in the near future with 164 new rooms and a mega-yacht marina.
United Airlines is revamping its Global First and Business First cabins on many international routes with a new service called Polaris Business Class that focuses on allowing passengers to sleep (with new pillows and mattress cushions). Also, the carrier will replace many Global First lounges over the next 18 months with Polaris lounges (starting at ORD in December).
The 1,142-room Sheraton Princess Kaiulani in Waikiki has begun refurbishing 280 guestrooms in its Ainahau Tower. By this fall, those rooms will have new furniture, beds, carpeting, wallpaper, and drapes.
The 120-room Wakulla Suites in Cocoa Beach, Fla. (now owned by Westgate Resorts) will start renovations this summer, overhauling all guestrooms, the pool area, and public spaces.
The Bacolet Beach Club in Tobago will add 10 new two-bedroom suites by the end of this year.
Officials in Thailand have banned tourists from three islands (Koh Khai Nai, Koh Khai Nok, and Koh Khai Nui) that are popular day-trip destinations from Phuket in order to protect the region's coral reefs.
Swiss officials celebrated the completion of the world's longest and deepest railway tunnel (35.4 miles, descending at one point more 7,500 feet beneath the Alps). The tunnel will allow passenger trains to journey through the Alps in 17 minutes.
Hotels opening recently include the 129-room Me Miami; 158-room Thompson Seattle; the 148-room W Miami; the 200-room Sheraton Okinawa Sunmarina Resort in Japan; the 178-room Hyatt Centric Montevideo in Uruguay; the 142-room Park Hyatt Mallorca in Spain; and the 600-room Hilton Cleveland Downtown.
Hotels debuting in the near future include the 130-room LUMA Hotel Times Square in New York City (fall 2016); the seven-room Four Seasons Private Island Maldives (late 2016); and the 151-room The MC Hotel in Montclair, N.J. (early 2018).
